Josh’s Bar Mitzvah Bash at Celebrate Catering
Portland DJ Rich Ellis performed at Josh’s Bar Mitzvah party on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at Celebrate Catering Events Conference Center in Lake Oswego, Oregon. In addition to my normal sound system setup in the main ballroom, I also brought a separate media player that could be connected to the house system so there would be background music for the 150 guests in the adjacent bar.
After about 20 minutes most of Josh’s friends had arrived so I had the kids make their way to the main ballroom for some games and boy did we have some fun with “Name That Tune,” Soccer vs. Basketball (Josh loves both sports), Coke and Pepsi and a wild time with “Running Tic Tac Toe” that brought down one of the decorative graffiti backdrops. Fortunately, the kids were helpful getting it put back up before any of the adults took notice 🙂 and we finished with the limbo before the adults entered the room for dinner.
After everyone found their seats, I introduced Josh and he came into the room to “From Now On” off “The Greatest Showman” soundtrack. I then segued to “Live It Up” by Nicky Jam w/ Will Smith and Era Istrefi, the theme from this year’s World Cup (Josh is a huge soccer fan) and his friends joined him on the dance floor.
This was followed by a special dance for Josh and his mom to “You’ll Be In My Heart” by Phil Collins and “Son of Man” also by Phil Collins for him and his dad. Josh’s dad then welcomed everyone before the buffet opened for dinner around 7:30.
A slideshow was planned for after dinner, but before that, Josh requested a Snowball dance and with all the kids surrounding him on the dance floor, Josh picked a partner to slow dance with. After about a minute, those two picked two more kids to dance with and by the end of the last song, all the kids were slow dancing. Of course, the parents also appreciate a good slow dance, so I played two more love songs for everyone before the slide show.
Next, the dance floor was officially opened to everyone and as soon as the familiar opening to “The Hora” began playing, most everyone was instantly on the move, circling up and lifting Josh up high in the chair. The Israeli dance music was such a hit, I kept it going a little longer as guests, chained hand-in-hand, danced their way around the entire room.
A variety of fun hit music followed… Everything from “Celebration” and “Happy” to “Stayin’ Alive,” “Uptown Funk” and more, it was a non-stop, energetic, fun time on the dance floor.
Josh’s dad requested some 70’s funk and “Give Up the Funk” from Parliament was well-received. Josh picked more recent hits, such as “Party Rock Anthem” and “I Gotta Feeling.”
This party went to 11pm and the dance floor was packed for much of the time. When it was over, Josh’s dad told me multiple times “how much fun he had.” I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Mazel Tov Josh and thank you dad Rob for choosing PRO DJs.
Hot Bat Mitzvah Party At World Trade Center
Ruthie’s memorable Bat Mitzvah party took place at the World Trade Center in Downtown Portland, Oregon on Saturday, July 14, 2018.
Even though this venue is covered, portions of the WTC are outside. This means air conditioning is not an option, so this was literally one hot party as the temperature outside soared into the 90’s. Ceiling fans and the sporadic giant fan helped a little, but no worries, the group of 200 guests would not be denied a great time.
As friends and family arrived, I played a variety of background music selections that included Ruthie’s favorites, Simon & Garfunkel and Maroon 5, as well as her father (Blondie, Fleetwood Mac) and mother’s (Broadway, Rent) favorites.
We had a short 20 minute window before dinner for some games and the ice was broken with the kids playing “How well do you know Ruthie?” and several wild rounds of “Coke & Pepsi.” Prizes provided by the family included Starbucks, iTunes and Movie gift cards.
After dinner and a toast, the party was off to the races with “The Hora” and chair raising. Most everyone joined in, but the smaller dance floor was no match for this many people, so the spillover stretched around much of the Sky Bridge Terrace.
With the glass ceiling, daylight would dominate, but that didn’t dampen the energy and the dance floor was hoppin’ all evening to hot hits such as “Happy” and “I Gotta Feeling,” plus family requests for classics “We Are Family,” “Dancing Queen,” YMCA and more.
With four gift cards left from the games earlier, we did a swing dance contest and I have to say that collectively, it was some of the best swing dancing I have seen. Our secret judge (Ruthie) picked the winners, but it seemed everyone had fun showing their moves.
Mazel Tov Ruthie and thank you mom Jen and dad Ken for choosing PRO DJs.

Portland Cityscape Lights Up Company Party
It was a perfect summer day for employees of a Portland area excavation company to gather with their spouses for a company party held on the rooftop of the Eastside Exchange Building in Southeast Portland, Oregon on July 7, 2018.
Guests began arriving at 5pm. I played a variety of background music from artists such as Adele, Bruno Mars and Queen, as well as some country music favorites. The cocktail hour went until 6pm and then everyone went down to the second floor Cascade Ballroom for dinner. The venue sent up an audio connection to the rooftop where I was setup, so I could continue providing background music through the ballroom house system.
Most guests returned to the rootop around 7:30 and then about an hour later the dance floor was officially opened. We had a few takers early who gathered in the small space in front of me, dancing to a request for Bruno Mars’ “24K Magic,” but by the next song, the entire rooftop deck was filled with folks getting down to Outkast, Michael Jackson, Bee Gees and more.
The setting sun provided stunning views of the Downtown Portland cityscape as the party rolled on with Usher’s “Yeah,” “Sexyback” from Justin Timberlake, Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger” and other fun songs to move too… the night wrapped at 10pm with “Kiss” from Prince.
DJ Revs Up Bat Mitzvah Celebration At Mittleman Jewish Community Center Portland
Maia and her friends and family had a great time at her Bat Mitzvah celebration held at The Mittleman Jewish Community Center in Southwest Portland on Saturday, June 30, 2018.
This one was held during the day with a 1:30pm start time. However, the ceremony ended a little early and guests began arriving around 1, but no problem, I was setup and had the background music playing as they made their way into the main ballroom.
The food was served right away and of course the kids finished eating quickly, so while the parents engaged in conversation and continued their meals, the kids had a great time playing games, such as the scavenger hunt, Coke and Pepsi and doing the limbo.
A toast from Maia’s parents followed before a slide show presentation and then dancing to “The Hora” with the traditional chair raising.
Yes, it was the middle of the day, but a real nice thing about the ballroom at the MJCC is no windows, so with the lights dimmed and my DJ lighting flashing to the beat of the music, it felt like a Saturday night and the dance floor raged for a good two plus hours.
Mazel Tov Maia and thank you Leticia and Joel for choosing PRO DJs.
