“Steve Marker is the best in town. Period.”
PRO DJs’ Steve Marker has been on quite a roll lately… already having performed at six Bar or Bat Mitzvahs in the first two months of 2013, with several more to go in March.
On Saturday, March 2, 2013, Steve was the DJ at Leo’s Bar Mitzvah held at Union/Pine in Portland, Oregon. While firing up the kids with a swing dance and freeze dance competition, he made sure all glow necklaces, rings, hats and glasses were handed out to liven things up a little more.
‘The Hora’ with chair raising got everyone involved and a music mix that included heavy doses of R&B, soul and hip hop as requested by our client (everything from Eminem and 2 Pac to Earth, Wind & Fire and Stevie Wonder), kept guests of all ages movin’ and groovin’ on the dance floor for 3+ solid hours!

Family Fun Night At Camas School Auction
It felt like Spring outside on Friday, March 1, 2013, but inside it was a Winter Wonderland theme for a Family Fun Night at Prune Hill Elementary School in Camas, Washington for their annual silent auction.
I had the opportunity to perform at this event for the first time last year and appreciated being chosen to perform again this year. This was an auction to raise money for the school with parents bidding on items and participating in various raffles, while I entertained the kids with hit music and fun games.
Like the last time I was here, the kids loved dancing to the latest hit songs. Three in particular were requested over and over again… ‘Thrift Shop’, ‘Gangham Style’ and One Direction’s ‘Kiss You’. We also had fun with a Swing Dance, Freeze Dance and five limbos running simueltaneously as the students leaned back through one after another, breaking the old record of four limbos at the last event.
When the auction tables were closed, the raffle winners were announced and prizes awarded. There was a still enough time though for a good run of fun party music and the kids, along with a few parents, danced and moved around to favorites ‘Cha Cha Slide,’ ‘Party Rock Anthem’ and of course, repeats of the three songs noted above… they couldn’t get enough 🙂
Back-to-Back Bat Mitzvahs For Portland DJs
Portland DJs Rich Ellis and Steve Marker performed back-to-back Bat Mitzvahs on Saturday, February 16, 2013.
The first was held for Ellie in the Crystal Ballroom at the Tiffany Center in Portland, Oregon from 12:30-4:30pm.
With the room split (adults on one side, kids on the other), Rich had the high-energy current music spinning for the kids at the very start, while competing for their attention was a photo booth with props. It was back and forth between the photo booth and dance floor the entire event, but they loved the tunes and collected a lot of photos.
After lunch, Ellie introduced family members and friends during the candle lighting ceremony. Some of the songs chosen for this event included: Bob Marley’s ‘Three Little Birds,’ Bill Withers ‘Lean On Me,’ ‘I Just Can’t Wait To Be King’ from the Lion King Soundtrack and Randy Newman’s ‘You’ve Got A Friend In Me.’
Following the candle lighting, Rich encouraged everyone to hit the dance floor for ‘The Hora.’ Reaction was immediate and they celebrated Ellie’s big day with the traditional chair raising. The parents danced a few numbers and then the kids returned for more shuffling between photos and dancing with an incredible dessert bar in the middle that had them all lined up waiting anxiously for it to open.
Starting at 6:30pm, Steve was all set-up and ready to go for Georgia’s Bat Mitzvah held at Congregation Shaarie Torah in Northwest Portland. Rich also made his way to this venue following the first event to provide a video projector and screen added by the client earlier in the week.
Georgia is a big fan of Ed Sheeran and the group One Direction… she requested nearly every one of each artist’s songs 🙂 Steve made this work by sprinkling in many of them as background music during dinner.
Before the dance floor was open to all with ‘The Hora’, Georgia shared special dances with her parents that included selections from the ‘Sleepless In Seattle’ Soundtrack and the appropriately titled ‘Georgia’ from Boz Scaggs.
The party then shifted into high gear as Steve played the hot hits and brought the special energy he is known for with fun and timely interaction.
It was an eventful day for these Portland DJs and judging by the immediate feedback from our clients, a successful one as well. Thank you for choosing PRO DJs and Mazel Tov Ellie and Georgia!

Estacada High School Winter Formal Dance
Estacada High School Students danced the night away at their Winter Formal dance held in the school commons on Saturday, January 26, 2013. The decorations were impressive and along with my DJ lighting, made the commons look like a hip night club.
Everyone danced non-stop to the latest hit music, including songs from Flo Rida, Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj, Pitbull and more. Especially popular was ‘Beauty and a Beat’ from Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj and ‘Scream and Shout’ from Will.I.Am and Britney Spears.
Thank you to advisor Autumn Gonzales and student Landon Y. for choosing PRO DJs. Autumn let me know after the dance she loved the music selection and really appreciated the clean edits. -Rich
